Editing Services

Gradient

I love working with other writers, and I'm committed to helping you achieve your writing goals and dreams. I tailor edits and mentoring to meet individual needs as every writer is unique, prices will vary from project to project because of this.

I offer edits on full manuscripts with comments on the document and an accompanying editorial report, or a readthrough with just the report. Likewise, I can offer edits with just comments on the document and no report - prices vary between these.

I also offer submission packages and other short edits. I mentor children's writers and can work on your project with you in small chunks, and offer support to get your project written or edited, alongside useful exercises or links, and always with positive and encouraging feedback.

Prices start from around £10 per 1000 words, but on larger projects such as full manuscripts edits it might be for example £450 for a 40k edit, etc. depending on what sort of edit was required. For shorter books such as chapter books for 5-8 year olds, and averaging around 8000 words, this would be around £90-100 approx.

I am happy to discuss tailoring the mentoring or edits to you, so please get in touch if this is something that you are interested in.

Please do email ejpalmer@btinternet.com with your writing requirements so that I may see if I am able to help and work with you on your project and give you a quote if so.

I look forward to working with you!

Testimonials

Working with Emma on my debut YA novel was a brilliant experience. Her feedback was that perfect blend of helpful critique and encouragement, enabling me to see areas for improvement without losing heart over the scale of work needed. Her guidance was invaluable in helping me get to grips with my plot, tighten up the story and understand my characters more deeply prior to submitting my manuscript to agents. As someone with very little knowledge of the industry, Emma’s advice also helped massively with navigating the querying process. She’s just a gem!

I was lucky enough to be mentored by Emma for the WriteMentor summer mentoring programme, and I honestly believe I wouldn't be here without her kindness, support and thoughtful edits. Her focus on characterisation and framing the world through your MC's thoughts and experiences is invaluable, and I learned so much. To have her as your cheerleader is something that every writer needs.

- Emily Randall

I’m fortunate Emma came into my life as a Beta reader for my last WIP and her encouragement and support have been invaluable. Emma approaches her critiques and feedback with professionalism and positivity; her joy for writing is infectious and her editing, insightful and encouraging. Not to mention she is the Queen of killer pitches!

Emma has a great eye at seeing what works in a manuscript and what doesn’t. She’s incredibly insightful, detailed and constructive. I felt very positive moving forward with my story.

I met Emma through Twitter. Her account has always been one I've followed and the support she gives is wonderful. Imagine my delight when I discovered she offered editing services. Using her words...She made my book sparkle. Such a professional service with excellent guidance and an editorial report that's every writers dream. Thank you Emma for your attention to detail and friendly approach. I will be using your services from here on in. To others, I can't recommend Emma enough!

Emma is a fantastic editor and I highly recommend her. Her edits and suggestions are to the point, and are always to make the MS better and stronger, but she also provides a lot of encouraging feedback for when your writing works. She has worked on the first three chapters of my MG MS and not only has she made it better, but I now feel confident to begin submitting to agents with it.

I've been mentored by Emma for a number of years now and her advice and support have been absolutely brilliant - I always get in-depth advice on how to improve my writing, and it's delivered in a very kind and thoughtful way which is a must when dealing with the pieces we love so much! I'd definitely recommend to anyone who needs help with their writing, from basic reassurance to full line edit analysis 🙂

Putting your work out into the world is scary, but I wouldn't hesitate to entrust it to Emma. She's lovely to deal with and happy to cater to your needs.

Emma's report is detailed, identifying what's working and areas for further development. She also shares any articles and books that might be useful. They always are!

Emma's input has been invaluable. I'm so grateful for the big part she's played in making me a better writer. I can't recommend her editing service highly enough.

Emma's in a league of her own as mentor and editor. She's a bottomless source of knowledge, both of children's literature & films as inspiration. She's a creative guide, helping you consider & shape your work, always offering respectful & shrewd feedback. She's one of the most supportive & generous writers I've been lucky enough to work with and her mentorship, through WriteMentor, was fundamental to me securing an agent.

Writing can be lonely, especially when you find it hard to share your work with others. But sometimes you need someone in your corner cheering you on and to bounce ideas off.

I was lucky enough to find Emma. Her friendly, down to earth approach was instrumental in helping me complete my second middle grade novel – Eddie King’s Hot Potato.

I was finding it difficult to hone my protagonist’s voice and resolve some key areas of the plot, but Emma worked through everything with me and thanks to her expert advice I was really able to get to the heart of my story.

Her insightful feedback also enabled me to make sure my main character was driving the action. Emma edited my manuscript line by line and showed me how I could make small tweaks – often by changing as little as one or two words - to create a unique voice and world for my characters.

Working with Emma was a real pleasure from start to finish. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend her editorial services to others or use them again myself.

She really is a star.

Emma read my novel in super quick time and the feedback that I received was detailed and constructive. Emma’s feedback didn’t feel overwhelming, and helpful examples were provided when tacking issues in the text. I would certainly request more feedback from Emma without a second thought.
